An unusual situation occurred in Portugal at the European Women’s Water Polo Championship (players under 20).
After the match between Serbia and Turkey, in which our players won 11:10, the Turkish leadership filed a complaint with the organizers regarding the timing at the end of the match. The Turks, whose coach received a red card during the match for unsportsmanlike behavior, believed that they had 3.9 seconds left for the last attack, not 1.9, as the referees ruled during the match.
After reviewing the footage, the European Aquatics Federation’s Competition Commission upheld Turkey’s appeal and made the unusual decision to register the match only after another 3.9 seconds had elapsed.
Late last night, at 10:30 p.m. Serbian time, the girls had to re-enter the pool and take up positions as in the final. The Turkish girls took the ball from the same spot, but, fortunately, they failed to score a goal in the remaining 3.9 seconds. Thus, our water polo players again defeated the Turkish girls with a score of 11:10. This time, the Turkish coach did not complain.
The Serbian women’s team found out last night who their opponent will be in the quarterfinals. The draw has determined that Serbia and Croatia will play in the top 8 playoff tonight at 9:15 p.m.
