Trebinje will host the first international water polo cup from January 3 to 5, 2026, a sporting event the likes of which have never been seen in this city. The top world teams will gather in southern Herzegovina – Serbia, Hungary, Greece, France, Italy and Spain, countries that have dominated European and world pools for years.
On this occasion, Mayor Mirko Ćurić, Director of the Public Institution “Bazeni” Bojan Okuka, and President of the Leotar Association Boban Brnjoš addressed the public.
All matches will be played in the “Ana Čučković” indoor Olympic swimming pool, which will become the epicenter of top water polo and the meeting place of the current Olympic, world and European champions.
The Mayor of Trebinje, Mirko Ćurić, emphasized at a press conference that this event has special significance both for sports and for the overall promotion of the city.
– It is a great honor and pleasure that Trebinje has the opportunity to host the world’s best water polo teams. This tournament is another strong confirmation of the title awarded to Trebinje – European City of Sport for 2025. We are showing that our city has the sports infrastructure, knowledge and energy to host an event of the highest international level – said Ćurić.
The Director of the Public Institution “Bazeni”, Bojan Okuka, emphasized that the “Ana Čučković” indoor Olympic swimming pool fully meets all the requirements for organizing such a competition.
– We are proud that the world’s top national teams will be playing in our pool. This is confirmation of the quality of the sports infrastructure in Trebinje and an additional incentive for the development of water sports – emphasized Okuka.
The president of the Sports Association “Leotar”, Boban Brnjoš, said that the tournament represents a historic step forward for Trebinje sports.
– The organization of such an event is the best proof that the title of European City of Sports is not symbolic, but deserved. Trebinje is positioning itself as a city of sports, youth and major international competitions – said Brnjoš.
The tournament is organized by the Water Polo Club “Leotar”, with the support of the City of Trebinje, the Public Institution “Bazeni” and the Sports Association “Leotar”, and tickets can be purchased at affordable prices at the Public Institution “Bazeni Trebinje” and the Sports Hall “Miloš Mrdić”.
