The French took advantage of Serbia’s more relaxed, slower start and, thanks mostly to Vernoux, took a 3:1 lead. It was a wake-up call. After Mandić’s goal from the penalty spot, Gladović reduced the opponent’s advantage with a player. Mandić then shot inaccurately from the second penalty spot, but Martinović equalized in the very end, five seconds before the first break.
In the second quarter, Serbia was much better, more efficient and more specific in front of their own goal. Nikola Jakšić almost scored twice with his mastery, Drašović also scored two goals, Martinović and Strahinja Rašović tormented Fontanin from the right side. The Serbian defense and Glušac acted better, although Drađe twice and Vern found a way to the net once.
