IN MEMORIAM Zlatko Šimenc (1938 – 2026)

Zlatko Šimenc, one of the most significant athletes in the history of Yugoslav water polo, unique in that he played for both the water polo and handball national teams of Yugoslavia at the same time, passed away in Zagreb at the age of 88 after a long and serious illness.

With the national team, he won silver at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, three European silver medals in Budapest 1958, Leipzig 1962, and Utrecht 1966, as well as gold and silver at the Mediterranean Games and gold at the Universiade.

He played for Mladost Zagreb, with whom he was European champion four times, in 1967, 1968, 1969 and 1971.

After ending his playing career, he remained dedicated to the sport, working in clubs and participating in the development of younger generations of water polo players.

The Water Polo Federation of Serbia extends its condolences to its colleagues from the Water Polo Federation of Croatia and the family of Zlatko Šimec.
